about sharon friel
I’m a consultant, strategist, and board director helping organisations get the most out of the resources they have. With over 15 years in senior roles, I’ve worked across all areas of nonprofit leadership — from strategy and reform to service delivery and digital transformation. I have deep experience in mental health but also have interest and skills in primary care, community development, alcohol and other drugs, and women’s health.
My key areas of strategic interest include:
Mental health lived experience leadership and co-design
Policy, advocacy, and reform
Community-controlled organisations
Environmental sensing and future planning
Organisational strategy - cut through the noise
I’m also highly pragmatic and work quickly to deliver clear, concrete solutions when operational challenges arise, such as:
Program development and evaluation
Fundraising strategy
Digital transformation, data, and SharePoint implementation
Grant writing and business development
Governance, budgets, and workshop facilitation
If your organisation doesn’t need, or can’t resource a full-time executive but still requires expert input on projects, I can help. I hold a Master of Business Administration (Digital Focus), a Graduate Certificate in Business (Philanthropy and Nonprofits), and a Bachelor of Psychological Science.
Key Achievements:
Over the past 15 years, I’ve delivered strategic, operational, and sector-level outcomes across mental health, community services, and lived-experience leadership. Highlights include:
Leading one of Australia’s largest lived-experience co-design projects, engaging more than 100 leaders nationally.
Authoring a new mental health program that has since attracted over $2.5 million in government funding.
Increasing organisational revenue by 63% over three years through strategic growth and partnership development.
Securing almost $3 million in bequest pledges, grounded in values-aligned relationship building.
Rebuilding multiple underperforming branches into high-performing teams with strong culture and low staff turnover.
Contributing to sector reform through parliamentary submissions, advocacy, and national presentations.
